A male and female Cardinal in a summer linden — the male's red luminous against the fresh green foliage, the female's warm brown-orange blending more carefully with the surrounding leaves. This is a summer watercolour, painted when Glen could observe the cardinals that frequented the trees near his Ontario studio, the leaves still full and the light falling soft through the canopy.
Cardinals in summer present a different challenge than the winter compositions Glen is better known for: the red of the male against snow is dramatic contrast, but finding that same bird in green requires subtler chromatic judgment. Glen solved it by allowing the foliage its own density and weight, making the male's red all the more startling when you find it.
