A gravel road crests a hill and drops into a summer Ontario valley — a grey barn visible at the farm below, hydro poles following the road down, an orchard to the right, wildflowers at the roadside verge. This is rural Ontario painted with the affection of someone who grew up in it: the specific texture of a gravel road, the way an Ontario summer valley looks from the top of a concession hill, the particular blue of distant hills under a July sky.
Glen was as much a painter of the cultivated landscape as of wilderness, and this piece shows that dimension of his work: the barn, the orchard, the hydro poles — the human presence is acknowledged and included, not edited out. This Ontario rural landscape is one of his most personal and warmly observed pieces.
