A Phalaenopsis orchid — two blooms open on an arching stem, the pink petals precisely veined, the labellum orange-yellow at centre, the plant rooted in a pad of Spanish moss. This 1994 coloured pencil botanical study is one of Glen's most elegant: the vertical composition of the single arching stem with its two flowers uses the negative space around it as deliberately as any formal arrangement. The colouring is both botanically exact and visually sumptuous.
Glen brought the same systematic attention to cultivated plants as to wild ones — the orchid presents different challenges from a forest wildflower, but the same fundamental discipline applies.
