A forest interior in peak autumn colour — the viewer standing among the trees, not looking at them from outside. The branches weave across the canvas, each one carrying leaves at a different stage of turning: gold, amber, green, rust, the colours overlapping and layering as they do in an actual Ontario forest in October. This 1993 work is among Glen's most painterly and impressionistic — the coloured pencil applied with visible energy, the marks building colour and depth simultaneously.
Most landscape paintings show you autumn from across a field. Glen put you inside the forest, where the colour surrounds you on all sides and the light filters through from above. It is a more immersive and arguably truer experience of Canadian autumn than the conventional prospect view. This piece is one of his most distinctive and sought-after landscape works.
