A newborn cottontail — barely larger than a fist, eyes open to a world it has just discovered — sits among purple violets, its ears alert, its spotted baby coat still visible. This is as tender as wildlife art gets: the animal so young and so precisely rendered that the viewer instinctively lowers their voice. The violets surrounding it are botanically accurate, each petal placed where a violet petal would actually be.
Glen's small mammal studies of young animals are among the most beloved in his catalogue. This piece achieves what the best wildlife art does — it makes the viewer feel present at a moment nature usually keeps private.
