A male and female cardinal share a snow-laden pine bough: the male above, in full red with his black mask and raised crest, the female just below in warm olive-brown, touched with red at the wings, tail and crest. Soft drifts of snow sit on the long green needles, and the birds stand out against an almost empty white ground.
In 1964 the Federation of Ontario Naturalists asked Glen to paint its Christmas card, and this is the painting that was used: a pair of cardinals on a pine bough. He was paid $150, more than he had ever received for a single work. One of the cards reached Gene Aliman, art director of The Canadian magazine, who invited Glen to bring in a portfolio, and the commissions that followed launched his career.
