A Snowy Owl launches from a lichen-covered rock — wings spread to their full span, filling the upper half of the canvas, the yellow eyes fixed directly on the viewer. This 1982 watercolour is one of Glen's most dramatic and formally bold compositions: the white owl against a pale winter sky, distinguishable only by its feather texture and the shadows within the wing, the lichen-covered tundra rock below providing the only warm colour in the painting.
The challenge of painting a white bird against a light sky occupied Glen across multiple Snowy Owl compositions. This one solves it through the wing spread — the under-wing shows the barring that distinguishes the female, and the rock below gives the eye a resting point. His Snowy Owl paintings are among the most celebrated and widely collected in his catalogue.

Choose one of three edge finishes. A mirrored wrap gives the impression that the work continues around the edge of the canvas. A white edge offers a traditional, untouched finish, and a black edge frames the work with a quiet accent, almost like a shadow.
