Two polar bear cubs play on the Arctic pack ice — one rearing up, one crouching forward on the edge of a melt pool, the blue ice and Arctic water behind them. This 1985 watercolour is among Glen's most warmly received Arctic works: the cubs' thick white fur rendered with the same patient fine-brush work he brought to all his young-animal subjects, the ice surface given every variation of blue and white that genuine Arctic ice carries.
The cubs' postures are exactly right — the one rearing is doing what bear cubs do when they want to look bigger, the one approaching the water's edge showing the cautious curiosity of an animal still learning its environment.
