A Common Loon at the nest — the adult in full breeding plumage, two grey chicks at the water's edge beside the nest, the reflection of the loon's iridescent head visible in the still shallows. This 1985 watercolour is a more intimate and habitat-specific composition than the open-water loon paintings: the nest location, the cattail roots, the lily pads at lower right all precisely observed. The adult's reflection in the water, including the red eye catching the light, is one of the painting's finest passages.
Glen's loon studies span several decades and approaches — open water portraits, family scenes, dramatic takeoffs. This nesting scene shows the birds at their most vulnerable and most private.
