Looking through a stand of old Eastern White Cedars toward an autumn valley — Hockley Valley in full October colour, red and orange maples visible through the cedar trunks, the blue hills of the Niagara Escarpment in the far distance. A split-rail fence runs along the lower edge. This coloured-pencil landscape captures the particular quality of Ontario autumn seen from elevation: the sheer volume of colour in every direction, more than any single vantage point can hold.
Hockley Valley was one of the landscapes Glen returned to across his career, and this painting shows why — the combination of foreground forest texture, middle-ground colour, and distant blue hills is one of the most satisfying compositional structures in Ontario landscape.
