# Red Squirrel and Pileated Woodpecker — Giclée on Paper

A Red Squirrel faces off against a Pileated Woodpecker on the trunk of a dead pine — the woodpecker emerging from its excavation, the squirrel on a branch just across, both alert and assessing. This is a territorial encounter in progress: the Pileated, excavating for carpenter ants, and the Red Squirrel, investigating the noise, have come face to face. The composition is spare and tense, the background dissolved to a soft blue.

Glen observed and documented exactly these kinds of interspecies encounters — not the obvious drama of predator and prey but the quieter negotiations of species sharing territory. The Pileated's brilliant red crest and bold black-and-white markings are rendered with the precision the species demands. Glen Loates is a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts; this dual-species composition is one of his most compositionally disciplined works.
