# Chipmunk on Forest Floor — Giclée on Paper

A chipmunk navigates its way through a tangle of dried grasses, fallen maple leaves, and bare branches — the whole composition a study in the texture of a Canadian forest floor in late autumn. Glen gives us the chipmunk's world at chipmunk scale: the branches overhead are significant obstacles, the leaf litter an entire terrain. The blue bittersweet berries just out of reach above add the only colour note to an otherwise amber and brown palette.

This 1982 watercolour is one of Glen's most habitat-centred compositions — the environment is as carefully observed as the animal, and the result is a painting that feels genuinely placed. Glen Loates is a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts; his wildlife studies are collected internationally and held in major museum collections.
