# Hooded Mergansers — Giclée on Paper

A pair of Hooded Mergansers on rippled water — the male in foreground with his extraordinary black-and-white crest fully raised, the female behind him with her rust-coloured head and subtler plumage. This 1987 watercolour is a study in the dramatic sexual dimorphism of the species: the male's crest is one of the most theatrical displays in North American waterfowl, and Glen rendered it with complete precision. The water surface below the birds carries warm amber reflections from the autumn light.

Glen observed Hooded Mergansers on Ontario's lakes and rivers across all seasons, watching the crest display and the distinctive diving behaviour that makes them different from any other duck. He is a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts; his waterfowl paintings are prized in collections across North America.
