# Saddleback — Giclée on Paper

A winter view through birches and spruces toward a distant saddleback mountain — the foreground trees dark against the snow, the middle-ground forest a deep blue-purple, the snow-filled valley and mountain visible in the far distance. This 1992 coloured pencil landscape is one of Glen's most layered winter compositions: the depth is achieved through the atmospheric progression from warm-toned foreground trees through cool mid-distance forest to the blue-grey mountain behind.

Glen's landscape work in coloured pencil demonstrates a different kind of control from his watercolour — the marks are visible, the texture inherent in the medium, and the depth must be built through tonal and colour progression rather than wet washes. Glen Loates is a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts; this winter mountain landscape is one of his finest coloured-pencil landscape works.
