# Bohemian Waxwing — Giclée on Paper

Three Bohemian Waxwings descend on a berry-laden branch — one upside-down reaching for a cluster, one spreading wings for balance, one regarding the viewer with the sidelong composure of a bird that knows exactly what it is doing. The berries are red against olive-grey foliage, the birds' yellow tail-tips and crimson wing markings catching the light. This is a composition that rewards looking: the more time you spend with it, the more movement and personality emerge.

The Bohemian Waxwing was one of Glen's favourite winter subjects — a bird whose plumage is almost impossibly refined, demanding the kind of close observation he devoted his career to. The medium appears to be gouache or oil, giving the colours a density and luminosity that watercolour alone cannot achieve. Glen Loates is a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts; his bird studies have been exhibited in major galleries and collected worldwide.
