# Garter Snake and Grasshopper — Gallery Canvas

A garter snake strikes upward at a grasshopper in mid-flight — the snake's body coiled on a sandy bank, the yellow-striped scales rendered scale by scale, the mouth open wide, the grasshopper's wings spread at the moment of attempted escape. This is one of Glen's earliest known works, signed 1963, and it already demonstrates the observational discipline that would define his career: the snake's anatomy is exact, the grasshopper's wing venation visible.

Glen began his wildlife art career as a teenager, and this early work shows the precocious technical mastery that attracted his first professional commissions. The composition is deceptively simple — snake, bank, grass, prey — but every element is placed with deliberate precision. Glen Loates is a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts; this 1963 work is among the earliest in his collected catalogue.
