# Building Our Future — Gallery Canvas

A beaver at work — dragging a freshly gnawed branch, the clean white tip of the felled birch behind it, the whole scene lit with the soft blue and gold of a northern morning. This is Canada's national animal doing exactly what it has always done: building something that will outlast the season. Glen gave the beaver the same dignity and precision he brought to his raptors and large mammals — no sentimentality, just careful, admiring observation.

Executed in coloured pencil, the piece has a softness that suits the subject's domestic industry. The pastel background wash lifts the beaver off the page while keeping the mood quiet and unhurried. Glen Loates is a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts whose work documenting Canadian wildlife spans five decades of international recognition.
