# The Sentinel — Gallery Canvas

A lone White Pine on a Shield promontory — the tree shaped by decades of prevailing wind, leaning slightly, the branches on the windward side stripped and dead while the leeward side still holds its dark green needles. This is the sentinel tree of the Canadian Shield: standing apart from the forest, shaped by exposure, enduring. Glen gave it the full complexity of a portrait subject — the specific character of this particular pine, not a generic tree.

The Shield pine is one of the most powerful symbols in Canadian landscape art, connected to the Group of Seven tradition that Glen both inherited and extended through his naturalist approach. Glen Loates is a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts; this is one of his most emblematic and painterly landscape works.
