# Snowshoe Hare — Bag

Two Snowshoe Hares in winter white — one alert and upright, one crouched low in its form, both completely camouflaged against the snow they sit on. This 1987 watercolour is an exercise in the particular challenge of painting white animals in white settings: the hares are visible only through their shadows, the slight warmth of their fur against the cooler white of the snow, the dark eyes and ear tips that give them away.

Glen mastered the painting of white-in-white — the same challenge he met in his Snowy Owl paintings and his polar bear work — through an understanding of the different whites that exist in nature. The hares' fur is warmer than the snow; the snow in shadow is cooler than the snow in light. Every distinction is there. Glen Loates is a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts; his snowshoe hare studies are among his most technically demanding and beautiful winter wildlife works.
